Other Things Happen in July Besides Swimming
Unfolding over the 5 chapters: Bank Holiday, Bleach, Is there Life on Mars, Funeral, and Czar, the project Other Things Happen in July besides Swimming asymmetrically juxtaposes the events of two Julys’ in Greece: 1965 and 2015, July 1965 was a period of political crisis and social unrest that preceded the military Junta, July 2015 was a zenith in the so-called ‘Greek crisis’. 2015 was the summer of the referendum, capital controls and eventual capitulation of the left-wing government to the country’s lenders. The source material for the project is drawn exclusively from newspapers of the respective times, and endeavors an affective reading of experience and memory of these two monumental Julys’ via imagery that is at once, literal, oblique, mundane, everyday, yet significant.
